Wix or a custom website? When a builder is enough

We build sites on Wix and on custom code, so we have no reason to push either one at all costs. This is how we choose between them.

Wix or a custom website? Wix is enough when you need a presentation site you want to edit yourself and you need nothing beyond regular pages, forms and galleries. A custom website pays off when the site has to do more: calculate a price, guide a customer through an enquiry, connect to your system or be as fast as possible. We know both from practice, so we will not dress anything up.

Plenty of sites in our portfolio are built on Wix or Wix Studio, such as the restaurant U Sv. Anny. Others run on custom code. And with the interior studio Home Harmony we went through both: the site started in Wix Studio and we later moved it to custom code.

When Wix is enough for a business

Wix and similar builders are a good choice for businesses that need a clean, good-looking site and want to change copy and photos themselves in a friendly editor. Typically:

  • A presentation site of a few pages: services, about, references, contact.
  • Restaurants, cafés or salons where atmosphere, the menu and contact lead the way.
  • Businesses that want to start fast and manage content without a developer.
  • Sites where a form, a gallery, a blog or a standard booking tool is enough.

A well-built Wix site can look excellent. Design, structure and copy decide, not the platform itself. One example is U Sv. Anny: a new site on large photos with the menu, opening hours and booking in a few clicks, plus a visual identity and Instagram.

Where Wix hits its limits

A builder is comfortable until you ask it for something it was not made for. These are the limits we run into most:

  • Custom logic: a price calculator, a quiz, a step-by-step enquiry or a link to an internal system is hard to build or comes with compromises.
  • Speed: the platform loads its own scripts that you do not control, so fine-tuning Core Web Vitals is harder.
  • Platform lock-in: a Wix site cannot be taken and moved elsewhere. If you leave, you rebuild.
  • Subscription: you pay the platform regularly for as long as the site runs.
  • Language versions and SEO details: the basics work, but with a more complex structure you hit what the editor allows.

None of this makes Wix bad. It just helps to know when a custom website makes more sense.

When a custom website is the better choice

A custom website pays off when the site has to work for the business, not just look good. That is, when it should guide customers to an enquiry, give them an indicative price, connect to booking, stock or an admin, or when you need top speed and full control over SEO.

Another plus is that the code is yours and the site is not tied to one platform. As the business grows, an e-shop, a client zone or a custom system can be added without rebuilding from scratch.

A builder is good for a site that mainly informs. Custom code is better for a site that has to do something.

Wix or a custom website: five questions to decide

If you are not sure, answer a few questions. The more “yes” answers, the more sense a custom website makes:

  • Should the site calculate something for the customer, recommend something or guide them through a step-by-step enquiry?
  • Do you need links to booking, stock, invoicing or your own admin?
  • Is speed on mobile and search ranking in a competitive field decisive for you?
  • Do you plan to expand the site a lot in the next few years, for example with an e-shop or a client zone?
  • Do you want the site to be yours and not dependent on one platform's subscription?

If you answered “no” to all of them, Wix is probably enough and there is no reason to pay for custom code. If it is half and half, it often makes sense to start on a builder and plan the move for when the business grows. That is exactly how it went with Home Harmony.

Home Harmony: from Wix Studio to custom code

Home Harmony is an interior studio from Prague, a father with over twenty years of renovations and a son with an interior design degree. They wanted a clear, modern site that shows their projects and does not look like everyone else's.

We designed a minimalist black and white site with large project photos, and it started in Wix Studio. When the studio needed more, we moved it to custom code with the same look. It gained things that would be hard to do in a builder:

  • A price calculator and a style quiz.
  • A mood board and visualisation slider.
  • A three-step enquiry and a project filter.
  • Czech and English versions.

On custom code we could also build things only loosely tied to the site: Můj den, a custom app for the team covering tasks, jobs and a calendar, and a graphics generator where the studio puts together its own Instagram posts and stories in its own style.

How moving from Wix to a custom website works

Leaving Wix does not have to mean starting from zero. A sensible process:

  1. 1We go through the current site: what works, what is missing and which pages Google already knows.
  2. 2We decide whether to keep the look or move it forward.
  3. 3We build a free demo of the new version, so you see the difference before deciding.
  4. 4We move the content and set up redirects from old addresses, so the site keeps its search positions.
  5. 5We switch the domain and turn the old site off only once the new one is live.

How we do it

We do not sell a platform, we sell a result. If Wix is enough for you, we will say so and build on it. If it hits its limits, we will propose custom code and explain why.

Sample: moving off Wix step by step, the old site goes offline only once the new one is live.

What Wix costs and what a custom website costs

With Wix you pay the platform's subscription for as long as the site runs, plus the design and content work unless you build it yourself. A custom website with us is a one-off payment: One-page from CZK 14,900, Custom site from CZK 24,900, Premium site from CZK 39,900. After that, only care from CZK 490 a month.

FAQ

  • 1

Is Wix good for a business website?

For a presentation site you want to edit yourself, yes. For a site with custom logic, links to other systems or a focus on top speed, a custom website is better.

  • 2

Can a Wix site be moved elsewhere?

Not directly, Wix does not let you export a site and move it to other hosting. Content and design can be carried over, but the site is rebuilt in the new place.

  • 3

Will I lose Google rankings when leaving Wix?

You do not have to, as long as redirects from old addresses are set up and the content Google knows is kept. That is what we focus on during a move.

  • 4

Which is cheaper, Wix or a custom website?

Wix is cheaper at the start, but the subscription never stops. A custom website is paid once, then only care from CZK 490 a month.
